Hello, I just joined the group and am hoping to get some advice and tips on my pitiful little garden in the yard!
The area of California where I live has hard, red, and I believe extremely alkaline soil. Add to that extreme heat and dryness (not to mention high powered Santa Ana winds in Spring and Fall) and it is a struggle just to get anything to grow let alone bloom. I also live at the base of protected hills that bring down everything from insects to weeds to snakes, roadrunners, and the occasional black tarantula. The sun beats down on most of my yard but I have had some odd luck in growing some trees on the property. My dream is to successfully grow some Sweet Peas, they were a favorite of mine as a child in the 1960's when my grandmother would grow them. Does anyone have any advice on trying to get these beloved flowers to grow in 100+ weather 95% of the year? Thanks, Patricia

If you’re thinking about ordering a bouquet of flowers as a gift for a loved one, you can make it even more special by choosing flowers that have a relevant meaning.
Attaching meanings to certain flowers is believed to have developed in Turkey during the seventeenth century, but it became an extremely popular practice in the UK during the reign of Queen Victoria and was known as “florography”. The Victorians produced many flower dictionaries giving meanings for different types of flowers. There isn’t a universally agreed set of meanings for different flowers today, but here are some examples of meaning of flowers commonly attached to them. |
